There are 2 different types of water mains leaks on private properties. The first is a visible leak and the second an underground leak that is not visible.
The Visible Leak
If you have a visible leak you will be able to see water escaping at some point around your property. This may be anything from a damp patch or puddle that stays present during dry weather, a greener patch of lawn than the rest of the area, feeling water under a patio slab when you walk on it, or visible running water at some point around the property. If this is the case we are usually able to fix the leak without having to carry out leak detection, however water will find the easiest exit point to the surface which can be away from where the actually leak is. If this is the case we will need to excavate to trace back to the source of the leak which can be in a different location. It is common for a manhole on your property to fill with water as that is an easy escape for it but the leak could well be a little way away.
The Non-Visible Leak
This is harder to detect and can sometimes go a long time without being noticed. You may receive a letter from the water board advising you that you have a leak or maybe receive a water bill that is much larger than normal. You may hear a constant sound of running water which may be quite quiet or very loud. If you have a water meter a good way to check if you have a leak is to turn your inside stopcock off and watch to see if the meter is still moving, if it is then the likelihood is that you have a leak on your water mains pipe and require leak detection in Reading or surrounding areas.
What to do if I think I have a leak?
The first thing to do is to contact your water authority to see what they advise. Various water authorities have very different approaches to each other in whether they do or don’t fix leaks on private property. They may suggest you contact a leak detection company and that’s where we come in.
